Pinkie + Croup = Bad Week for Miles

It seems like Miles cannot catch a break this week. Monday evening, after our day of doctor's appointments and x-rays for his pinkie, Miles started coughing and his voice was very raspy. Mike took him back to the pediatrician yesterday and was told Miles has croup.

What is Croup?
Croup is breathing difficulty accompanied by a "barking" cough. Croup, which is swelling around the vocal cords, is common in infants and children and can have a variety of causes.

Symptoms
Croup features a cough that sounds like a seal barking. Most children have what appears to be a mild cold for several days before the barking cough becomes evident. As the cough gets more frequent, the child may have labored breathing or stridor (a harsh, crowing noise made during inspiration).

Croup is typically much worse at night. It often lasts 5 or 6 nights, but the first night or two are usually the most severe. Rarely, croup can last for weeks. Croup that lasts longer than a week or recurs frequently should be discussed with your doctor to determine the cause.

Mike and I are doing everything the doctor told us to do to help Miles. Last night was a little rough but Miles slept through until morning. What can I say? He loves his sleep. And even though he can't really talk or cry, he's still smiling.

We're supposed to be heading to Michigan on Friday for my brother and future sister-in-law's baby shower. Right now, Mike and I aren't sure if he and Miles will be making the trip as planned. We'll make the call Thursday night or Friday morning.

Aubrey had Croup a couple of months ago. The Dr. gave her a steroid shot, might have been prednisone. He said that since she was so little, the shot would help her immune system fight through the cough. Keeping a humidifier in her room on at night was a big help. If he's bad at night, sit outside with him, the cool air took Aubrey's cough away. Aubs was on a role a little while ago, felt like every week there was a new issue. Miles is so cute in the water table photos, you guys are great parents, you'll get through it.
