More on Homer

Mike, Miles and I took Homer to the vet for his annual check-up on Friday. His blood work shows that his liver enzymes are back to normal; however, his one kidney enzyme is still elevated so the vet is convinced (with the previous abnormal blood test and urine text) that Homer is in Stage 1 Kidney Dysfunction. The good news is with the proper diet Homer should be around for some time.

Homer is now on a special dog food formulated for canines with kidney problems. The food is made without protein so it's easy for Homer to digest. For the first time, Mike and I were told that Homer needs to put on 3-5 pounds. The vet suggested adding grease, from the meat we make, to Homer's food since it's lower in calories than most dog foods. We started doing this over the weekend and there's no doubt Homer is loving life. We added some bacon grease and juice from a roast to his meals. It's good to see him gobbling up his food again.
