My Bean

My little bean is getting bigger and bigger by the day. As always, Mike and I are absolutely amazed by his ability to comprehend what we are saying, walk (and sometimes even RUN) all around, his ever-growing vocabulary and how much he has changed in 14 (almost 15) months.

A few weeks ago, we noticed Miles was cutting his two bottom lateral incisors. He was a tad fussy but overall happy. A few days later, we noticed two molars coming in too. We think he may have another set getting ready to pop up but it's hard to tell. Miles rarely ever opens his mouth when we want. The poor baby has done exceptionally well with the pain and only fusses a bit when he tired.

Instead of signing, Miles is now trying to vocalize what he wants or needs. He rarely uses the sign for milk now and instead goes to the refrigerator and says a word we believe is his rendition of milk. It starts with "mmm..." and has an ending I can't quite reenact in writing. He says wa-wa now and runs to the refrigerator and points at the door when he wants water. He tries opening the door when he wants milk.

This child LOVES music. Country, rock, oldies, classical - it doesn't matter. Every morning he wakes up, points to the iPod we have in his room and says "usic." He prefers to start his day off with "Sunny days, sweeping the clouds away..." but we usually get a smile regardless of what we turn on. He'll clap, spin and bop up and down when it's a song he likes. The other day he started kicking his legs out and saying "kick" after my mother-in-law showed him how to do it. He's favorite dancing song is still "Chicken Fried" by the Zac Brown Band.

Strawberries, watermelon, cantaloupe, cheese, yogurt, eggs, bread, pancakes, apples and macaroni are at the top his favorite foods list. Miles is not particularly interested in meat or vegetables. It's been rather difficult to get him to eat anything from either category. We're learning he's a very picky eater and are just thankful when he eats what we set in front of him. We recently gave him peanut butter and he seemed to like it. Thankfully, there were no signs of an allergy. He only had a tiny bit though, so we'll have to try again and see if he has a reaction. Mike and I are not allergic to peanuts (and we both LOVE peanut butter) so we are hoping that Miles doesn't have an allergy to them.

Miles is still sleeping between 10-12 hours every night. He heads to bed between 7-8 pm and then wakes sometime between 6-7 am. Mike and I are incredibly grateful to have a child who enjoys sleeping as much as we do. If only we could get him to sleep a little later on the weekends, we'd be set. We recently started transitioning him to one nap a day and so far he's doing pretty well. There are days he still needs/wants two but for the most part, he takes a nice 3-4 hour nap mid-day. We've been blessed with a sleeper.

Mike and I love being parents. Miles has taught us to relax and enjoy life. We appreciate the little things more and are seeing the world through his eyes. Our little bean is now our little explorer. Everything is new and exciting.

Oh, and before I forget, there is NO doubt that Miles should be the poster baby for child safety products. He's figured out how to open doors, turn on our front loading washer and flush toilets.
